Dating evidence: John Porter of Lamberhurst had in 1603 paid Anthony, Viscount Montague, £320 for a lease of Bayham Forge and Tollesley Forge [sic] and all their buildings and equipment from 1605 for twenty-one years (TNA, E 112/127/249). The name 'Furnace Wood' appears to have replaced 'Kingswood', the latter appearing on a Bayham estate map of 1640, copying an original of 1599 (Eales 1947:134).
